Editorials Respond To HHS Provider ‘Conscience’ Rule

Several newspapers published editorials in response to the recent HHS “conscience” rule. The rule, which will take effect Jan. 18, significantly expands the ability of health care professionals who receive federal grants to refuse to provide medical information and services they object to on moral or religious grounds. Protect The Vulnerable From Robots, British Scientist Warns

Top robotics expert Professor Noel Sharkey, of the University of Sheffield, has called for international guidelines to be set for the ethical and safe application of robots before it is too late. Professor Sharkey, writing in the prestigious Science journal, believes that as the use of robots increases, decisions about their application will be left to the military, industry and busy parents instead of international legislative bodies.

Baltimore’s high infant mortality rate is a “crisis that gets too little attention in part because the solution is so costly: ensuring that thousands of low-income women of childbearing age have consistent access to health care that would produce better birth outcomes,” a Baltimore Sun editorial states.
