Triple Cocktail To Tackle Stroke Risk

Scientists at The University of Nottingham are to investigate whether giving recovering stroke patients a triple cocktail of medicines could reduce their chances of a further attack. Pioneering research has already shown that giving patients two medicines aspirin and dipyridamole can lower the risk of further stroke by thinning the blood to prevent the clots that can block blood flow to the brain.

Medications Commonly Prescribed For COPD Associated With Increased Risk Of Cardiovascular Death, Heart Attack Or Stroke

The use of inhaled anticholinergic agents (medications that help reduce bronchospasm) by patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with a significantly increased risk of heart attack, stroke of cardiovascular death, according to a meta-analysis of randomized trials published in the September 24 issue of JAMA.

Revealing The Extent Of Stroke Damage

A Hunter stroke researcher has received national recognition for his research exploring changes in brain circulation in the first few hours after stroke. Dr Ferdinand Miteff, a Stroke Fellow with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) Stroke Research Group and a Hunter New England Health Neurologist, has been awarded the New Investigator Peter Bladin Award from the Australasian Stroke Society.

Every Minute Matters During A Stroke

In an editorial response to a report in the September 25 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine on the efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis treatment in the hours after acute ischemic stroke, Patrick Lyden, M.D., professor of neurosciences and director of the UC San Diego Stroke Center, cautions that the study should not be interpreted to mean that such therapy can be withheld for hours or even minutes.

3-D MRI Technique Helps Radiologists Detect High-risk Carotid Disease

Canadian researchers have used three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (3-D MRI) to accurately detect bleeding within the walls of diseased carotid arteries, a condition that may lead to a stroke. The results of the study published in the October issue of Radiology suggest the technique may prove to be a useful screening tool for patients at high risk for stroke.

Preliminary Data From Experimental Study Demonstrate Increased Mortality In Stroke Patients Treated With Epoetin Alfa

Ortho Biotech has become aware of preliminary data from an investigator-initiated experimental study of the effects of Epoetin alfa in patients with acute ischemic stroke. In this study, patients suffering acute ischemic stroke who were treated with Epoetin alfa within six hours of the onset of stroke symptoms died more frequently than patients receiving placebo. Ortho Biotech has reported this information to the U.S.
