Life Technologies To Develop Human Stem Cell Models Of Neurodegenerative Diseases To Advance Drug Development

Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE), a provider of innovative life science solutions, announced it will use human embryonic stem cells to develop new models of Lou Gehrig’s Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases with a grant it received this week from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), a state agency tasked with providing funding for stem cell research at California universities, private companies and research institutions.

US Public Supports Genetic Research, Testing And Government Spending On Research

The 2008 Virginia Commonwealth University Life Sciences survey shows that eight in 10 adults nationwide favor making genetic testing easily available to all who want it, and 54 percent say that the benefits of conducting genetic research outweigh the risks. Public concerns about genetic research are varied with a plurality of 38 percent saying their main concern is that too little is known about how to conduct such research safely.

James Thomson Receives 2008 Massry Prize Honoring Stem Cell Researchers

James Thomson, director of regenerative biology at the Morgridge Institute for Research and John D. MacArthur Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, has received the prestigious Massry Prize for 2008. The award recognizes Thomson for his groundbreaking discovery made a decade ago of human embryonic stem (ES) cells and his subsequent work in developing induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.
