Two Of The UK’S Biggest Charities Team Up To Boost Older People’s Health Through Sport

Two of the UK’s biggest charities are teaming up to help address health issues for older people across the country. The Football Foundation and Sport Relief are launching a £500,000 initiative aimed at helping the over-60s stay active and healthy.

Fundamental Issues In Geriatric Urology Surgical Care

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Dr. George Drach addressed issues related to care of the geriatric urology patients. There is a large increase in the population of patients over age 65 years. Common health problems in the elderly include prostate cancer as 8th most common with 10% of men affected. There are large numbers of urologic operations performed in the elderly; 40% of urinary operations and 60% of genital operations.

Exercise Referral Schemes For The Elderly Assessed

A new clinical trial commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme is assessing exercise programmes for older patients. Regular physical activity is associated with decreased mortality and has also been shown to reduce the risks of diabetes, hypertension and obesity, plus additional benefits include improved bone density, muscle mass, arterial compliance and energy.

Action On Elder Abuse And Age Concern England Launch Consultation On Survivors Network For Victims Of Abuse

Action on Elder Abuse, the only charity in the UK dealing exclusively with the abuse of older people and Age Concern England have launched a consultation on proposals to launch a Survivors Network for victims of Elder Abuse. The consultation is part of a Comic Relief funded project looking at the possibilities of developing a survivor lead network for the victims of elder abuse and their families.

After Menopause Complex Changes In The Brain’s Vascular System Occur

Many women experience menopausal changes in their body including hot flashes, moodiness and fatigue, but the changes they don’t notice can be more dangerous. In a new study, researchers at the University of Missouri have discovered significant changes in the brain’s vascular system when the ovaries stop producing estrogen. MU scientists predict that currently used estrogen-based hormone therapies may complicate this process and may do more harm than good in postmenopausal women.
