Family Members Want Straight Talk from Physicians Regarding Poor Patient Prognosis When a patient is incapacitated by serious illness, family members become surrogate decision makers. However, physicians may feel reluctant to discuss a particularly poor prognosis with surrogates for fear that it could extinguish all sense of hope.

Threat Of Legal Action If GPs Fail To Follow NICE, UK

GPs will have to prove they follow NICE guidelines or face the possibility of suspension, prosecution or the closure of their practice, the Government’s new health and social care regulator has warned. Baroness Young, chair of the Care Quality Commission, revealed that guidance from NICE would become legally enforceable from 2009/10, with doctors to face tough annual checks on their compliance.

BMA Welcomes Consultation On The Use Of 084 Numbers In The NHS, UK

Commenting on the Department of Health consultation on the use of 084 numbers in the NHS announced, Dr Laurence Buckman, Chairman of the BMA’s GP Committee, said: “Telephone systems should make accessing a GP easier and also be cost-effective for patients; we therefore welcome this consultation on how to improve the current system.
