‘Zinc Zipper’ Plays Key Role In Hospital-Acquired Infections

Hospital-acquired infections that are resistant to traditional antibiotic treatment have become increasingly common in recent years, confounding health care professionals and killing thousands of Americans. Now, in studies that could lead to new ways to prevent this growing public health danger, a team of University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers is exploring a “zinc zipper” that holds bacterial cells together and plays a key role in such infections.

No ESKAPE! New Drugs Against MRSA, Other Superbugs Still Lacking

Infectious disease experts warn that new drugs are urgently needed to treat six drug-resistant bacteria that cause most hospital infections and increasingly escape the effects of antibiotics. The ESKAPE pathogens - as these six bad bugs have been dubbed - are still on the loose more than four years after the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) first drew attention to the growing shortage of effective antibiotics.

MRSA And C. Difficile Infections Reduced By 50% In Hospital Study

To help prevent the spread of germs and protect its patients from infections, Rome Memorial Hospital is using two new products that kill germs on hands and surfaces between cleanings. According to Infection Prevention Director LeAnna Grace, the hospital conducted a 12-month research study of Germ Pro’s new surface disinfectant and hand sanitizing lotion to evaluate how well they work and was excited by the results.
