Gout Risk Linked To Genes

A study led by a team of scientists in Scotland suggests that genes may play a part in increasing one’s risk of developing gout, a painful condition that affects the joints.The study is published in the 9 March online issue of Nature Genetics and is the work of researchers based at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, and colleagues from other research centres in the UK and also in Croatia and Germany.

EMEA Recommends Marketing Authorisation Of Ipsen’s Adenuric(R) (Febuxostat) For The Treatment Of Chronic Hyperuricaemia In Gout, Europe

Ipsen (Paris:IPN) announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) provided a positive opinion for Adenuric® (febuxostat) 80 mg and 120 mg tablets for the treatment of chronic hyperuricaemia in gout and recommended it for marketing authorisation. The CHMP recommendation will now be forwarded to the European Commission for final marketing approval, which typically occurs within 60 to 90 days.

Pop Goes The Question Of Gout

“Soft drinks ‘bigger gout risk than alcohol’” read the headline in The Daily Telegraph today. It reported that “drinking too many sugary soft drinks and fruit juices can substantially increase the risk of gout”. Gout can be extremely painful and is caused by a build up of uric acid that crystallises in the joints. Uric acid is formed by the breakdown of purines which occur naturally in the body as well as in the diet.

According to a recent study published on bmj.com,men who drink sugary soft drinks and eat fructose have an increasedrisk of gout.Gout is a disease caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood(hyperuricemia) that provokes an inflammatory reaction in tissues andjoints. TAP Submits New Drug Application for Febuxostat for Hyperuricemia in Chronic Gout
