European Medicines Agency Approves Relistor? The First-In-Class Treatment Of Opioid-Induced Constipation (Oic) In Advanced-Illness Patients

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, 3rd July, announced that it has received EMEA marketing approval for Relistor? (methylnaltrexone bromide) subcutaneous injection. This first-in-class treatment is indicated for opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in patients with advanced illness who are receiving palliative care, when response to the usual laxative therapy has not been sufficient.

Cellular Self-Eating Promotes Pancreatitis

To survive tough times, cells sometimes resort to a form of self-cannibalism called autophagy. But as Hashimoto et al. reveal, autophagy can have a down side, destroying the pancreas by prematurely activating a digestive enzyme. In autophagy, a vesicle swallows a portion of cytoplasm and ferries it to the lysosome for digestion. The process is often beneficial, allowing hungry cells to recycle molecules, for example.

Common Bowel Problem Linked To Chili Pepper Pain Receptor

People with irritable bowel syndrome have a higher than usual number of chilli pepper pain receptors, according to a new study published 11 June.The research, published in the journal Gut, could lead to new therapies for the estimated one in five UK adults who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a painful condition which is poorly understood. Symptoms of IBS include abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel problems such as constipation or diarrhoea.
