Gene “silencing” May Improve Success Of Islet Cell Transplants For Diabetes - Molecular Pharmaceutics

Scientists in Tennessee are reporting that a gene therapy technique called “gene silencing” shows promise for improving the effectiveness and expanded use of transplants of insulin-producing cells to treat insulin-dependent, or type 1, diabetes. The study is scheduled for the December 1 issue of ACS’ Molecular Pharmaceutics, a bi-monthly journal.

200 Children With Diabetes Lobby MPs For Improved Support At School, UK

More than 200 children and young people with diabetes from across the country will today travel to a Diabetes UK lobby of Parliament to ask MPs to improve support for pupils with diabetes in schools in England. Heart-breaking struggle Diabetes UK is expecting at least 100 MPs to attend the lobby to hear about the inequalities in support for children with diabetes at school.

Lower Income Canadians More Likely To End Up In Hospital, Compared To Those Who Are Better Off

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), those at the lower end of the socio-economic ladder have a significantly higher change of being hospitalized for various illnesses, such as child asthma, diabetes and mental illness, compared to middle-class Canadians. Poorer Canadians are 2.4 times more likely to end up in hospital because of diabetes, compared to other Canadians, a CIHI study reveals.
