Tumor Growth Stunted By Blue Light Used To Harden Tooth Fillings

A blue curing light used to harden dental fillings also may stunt tumor growth, Medical College of Georgia researchers say. “The light sends wavelengths of blue-violet light to the composite, which triggers hardening,” says Alpesh Patel, a rising MCG School of Dentistry junior. “The light waves produce free radicals that activate the catalyst and speed up polymerization of the composite resin.

Toothpaste Too Pricey For The Poor

Fluoride toothpaste is prohibitively expensive for the world’s poorest people, according to a study published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Globalization and Health. Governor Signs Landmark Law For California Dental Hygienists - CDHA-Sponsored SB 853 Provides Greater Autonomy And Recognition Of Profession

Ending several decades of struggle by California dental hygienists to achieve independence as a distinct public health profession, Governor Schwarzenegger today signed Senate Bill 853 (Perata). The measure creates the Dental Hygiene Committee a new regulatory body housed under the California Dental Board dedicated solely to overseeing the state’s dental hygiene profession.

Advocates Launch Effort To Create State Oral Health Plan To Improve Oral Health & Reduce Disparities, Massachusetts

Leading oral health advocates in Massachusetts gathered in Sturbridge on June 4 and 5 to begin discussions on creating a comprehensive Oral Health Plan for Massachusetts aimed at eliminating barriers and increasing access to care for all Massachusetts residents. The two-day conference was attended by more than 200 dentists, dental hygienists, physicians, lawmakers, state oral health officials, insurers and a wide array of health advocates and policy leaders.

American Dental Association Comments On FDA’s Settlement Of Dental Amalgam Lawsuit

The American Dental Association (ADA) believes the recent settlement between the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the group Moms Against Mercury simply sets a definite deadline (July 28, 2009) for the FDA to complete what it began in 2002 - a reclassification process for dental amalgam, a commonly used cavity filling material. As far as the ADA is aware, the FDA has in no way changed its approach to, or position on, dental amalgam.

The number of patients seen for NHS dental treatment varies from area to area, latest figures released by The NHS Information Centre confirm. The report, NHS Dental Statistics for England, Quarter 3: 31 December 2007, found the proportion of both children and adults receiving NHS dental treatment varied according to strategic health authority (SHA) area.
