Cerus Initiates Phase I Clinical Trial For INTERCEPT Red Blood Cell System

Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) announced today that it has initiated a Phase I clinical trial of its INTERCEPT Blood System for red blood cells. Developed to improve the safety of red blood cell transfusions, the system is designed to inactivate pathogens that may be present in donated red blood cells, while preserving the blood products’ therapeutic properties.

Clot Risk Increased By Transfusions In Hospitalized Cancer Patients

Blood transfusions used to treat anemia in patients with cancer are associated with an increased risk of life-threatening blood clots, at a similar rate as other treatments for cancer-induced anemia, according to scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center. These findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, pose a quandary for doctors who want to prevent thromboembolism one of the leading causes of illness and death in people with cancer.
