Myanmar - General Situation Update - World Health Organization

According to state media there are 22,464 reported human deaths so far and 41,054 people missing. The total number of townships affected stands at 47 - 7 townships in the Delta Division are badly affected, plus another 40 townships in the Yangon area. Reports indicate that the scarcity of drinking water, lack of electricity and gasoline are aggravating the situation. The World Health Organization says the damage and number of injuries are still being assessed.

Estimated 3.2 Million Burmese Potentially Affected By Cyclone

As many as 3.2 million Burmese are estimated to be affected by the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis, according to geographic risk models developed by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Lehman College, CUNY. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the researchers calculated the likely distribution of the population of Burma (also known as Myanmar) and developed maps of the regions at greatest risk from the storm’s effects.

Food Aid Now Reaching Cyclone-Hit Areas In Myanmar - World Food Programme

The United Nations World Food Programme began distributing food today in cyclone-damaged areas of Yangon as it ramped up efforts to respond to the looming humanitarian needs in the southern coastal regions of Myanmar hardest hit by the powerful Cyclone Nargis three days ago.

American Red Cross Steps Up Relief For Survivors Of Myanmar Cyclone

The American Red Cross will receive a contribution of $1 million from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to assist the people affected by Cyclone Nargis. This brings the American Red Cross commitment to this international disaster response to $1.25 million. “Our hearts go out to the families who have been impacted by this crisis,” said David Meltzer, senior vice president, International Services of the American Red Cross.

American Red Cross Relief Flows Into Storm Ravaged States

For the second straight week, American Red Cross disaster volunteers are caring for tornado ravaged towns and cities across the South. But the work may not be finished as the same storm system dumps large amounts of rain on the east coast. As the clean up begins in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Georgia, the Red Cross is ensuring that people have the food, shelter and clean up supplies that they need.

Quake Deaths In Sichuan Is Probably Over 50,000 Says China’s Government

The death toll so far from Monday’s earthquake has been confirmed at over 19,500, but the Chinese authorities fear that more than 50,000 have been killed in Sichuan province alone, according to a press conference announcement made earlier today, Thursday 15th May, by the rescue headquarters of the State Council, headed by Premier Wen Jiabao.

World Red Cross Red Crescent Day In Action

Today, as the American Red Cross joins other Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies around the world in responding to the cyclone in Myanmar, it also marks the birth of Henry Dunant, the founder of what is today known as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Moved by the atrocities he witnessed during the Battle of Solferino in 1859, Dunant began advocating for the humane treatment of the sick and wounded during wartime.
