Kansas Supreme Court Unseals Two Suits Demanding Former AG Kline Return Abortion Records

Kansas Supreme Court on Friday unsealed two lawsuits demanding that Johnson County, Kan., District Attorney Phill Kline (R) return abortion records to Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, the Kansas City Star reports. In unsealing the cases, the court released hundreds of documents related to the two cases.

Pope Benedict Criticizes Italian Abortion Law, Prime Minister Berlusconi Responds

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday in a meeting with antiabortion advocates in Italy criticized the country’s 1978 law that legalized abortion, Reuters/San Diego Union Tribune reports. The law bans most abortions after the first 90 days of pregnancy. The law allows procedures until 24 weeks’ gestation if the pregnant woman’s life is at risk or if the fetus is abnormal.

Arizona Nursing Board Committee Recommends Allowing Nurses To Perform First-Trimester Abortions

The Arizona Board of Nursing’s Advance Practice Committee has voted unanimously to recommend that nurse practitioners be allowed to perform first-trimester abortions in the state, the Arizona Daily Star reports. The full nursing board is scheduled to vote on the recommendation on Wednesday.

The Current 24-Week Limit For Abortion Should Stay, Say UK Doctors

Research published in today’s (Friday 9 May 2008) BMJ1 concludes that over a recent twelve2 year period there was no significant improvement in the survival of babies born before 24 weeks gestation. Given this new data, the BMA is calling on MPs to vote against any attempt to reduce the 24-week upper time limit for abortion.

Polish Bishops Express Opposition To Council Of Europe Resolution Calling On Members To Legalize Abortion

Poland’s Roman Catholic bishops on Friday released a statement expressing “firm opposition” to an April Council of Europe resolution that appealed to all 47 Council member countries to legalize abortion despite opposition from Poland and other members, Agence France-Presse reports. The Council in its April resolution called for all member states to guarantee the right to safe and legal abortion.

Supreme Court Rejects Asylum Appeal From Man Whose Partner Underwent Forced Abortion In China

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday that it will not hear an appeal of a case in which a man was seeking asylum because his partner was forced to have an abortion in China, the Christian Science Monitor reports. The case involves Yi Qiang Yang, whose partner, Hui Ling, was forced to undergo an abortion by Chinese family planning officials when she was eight months pregnant.
