Hospitalizations for ischemic stroke fell by a third between 1997 and 2005, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. An ischemic stroke is when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain. While 54 of every 10,000 Americans age 45 and older were hospitalized for ischemic stroke in 1997, the ratio dropped to 36 of every 10,000 Americans the same age in 2005.
