British Medicine “Leaderless”

British medicine is blighted by “self-interested, ineffective, squabbling” bodies incapable of providing the leadership it so desperately needs. Writing in this month’s edition of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, Dr Richard Smith, former editor of the BMJ , argues that the “wreckage” left by MTAS* and MMC*, is a result of the lack of “coherent, strategic, high level leadership”. Parasitic Worm Strongyloides Stercoralis Is Endemic In Southern Yunnan Province, China

In their study of a random sample of villagers in the southern part of Yunnan province, China, Peter Steinmann (Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel, Switzerland) and colleagues in China and Switzerland found that 11.7% of the sampled population was infected with S. stercoralis. This neglected soil-transmitted worm infects humans through the skin; in healthy people the illness is usually mild, but in people with weakened immune systems the disease can be fatal.
