MSF Calls On Thailand To Halt Forcible Return Of Hmong Refugees To Laos

The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) called on the Thai government to halt all forced repatriation proceedings against the 7,500 ethnic Hmong refugees from Laos who are currently confined to a camp in northern Thailand’s Petchabun province. The refugees, who claim to have fled violence and persecution in Laos, are deeply fearful of being returned to their country. [click link for full article]

Predicting Risk Of Side Effects In Colorectal Cancer Using Gene Screen

UChicagoTech, the University of Chicago’s Office of Technology and Intellectual Property, has received a 2007 Deal of Distinction Award from the Licensing Executives Society of U.S.A. and Canada.The award stems from an agreement signed in late 2005 between the University of Chicago and the Mayo Clinic. The deal licensed the UGT1A1 diagnostic screen that predicts a patient’s risk of side effects from a standard first-line treatment for advanced cancers of the colon and rectum. Drug-Impaired Driving By Youth Remains Serious Problem, USA

Large numbers of American adolescents are putting themselves and others at great risk by driving while under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol, according to a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2006, 30 percent of high school seniors reported driving after drinking heavily or using drugs, or riding in a car whose driver had been drinking heavily or using drugs, at least once in the prior two weeks. ‘Huffing’ Household Chemicals Connected To Teen Suicide

With suicide as the third leading cause of death among adolescents in the United States, a new University of Denver (DU) study reveals inhaling or “huffing” vapors of common household goods, such as glue or nail polish, are associated with increased suicidal thoughts and attempts.Of the study’s participants, 33 percent reported having inhaled volatile solvents, 25 percent had attempted suicide, and 58 percent reported suicidal thoughts.
